Track to the Future

Happy New Year blog readers! I hope your last year was great and that your new year will be filled with great memories as well. It is time to blog about our family trip to the Holiwood Nights coaster enthusiast event at Holiday World this past May. The event is always titled after a specific movie so this year it was titled Track to the Future obviously in reference to Back to the Future. The event was immediately put on my radar when Holiday World announced their new B&M wing coaster Thunderbird back in July. Usually when a park in the area builds a $20+ million dollar roller coaster I find a way to get there!

Event Name

Thunderbird!

That's my girl

The event was held Friday, May 29th and Saturday the 30th. We left Birmingham Friday morning and arrived in Santa Claus,Indiana mid-afternoon. It really wasn't a bad drive topping out at around five hours. The kids did surprisingly well too. So what do you do when you arrive in Santa Claus Indiana? You check in at the Santa’s Lodge of course. Well that is what we did anyway. Santa’s Lodge is, unfortunately, the only hotel to stay at within 10 miles of Holiday World. If you were to say a Hampton Inn was compared to Honda Accord then Santa’s Lodge would be a Ford Focus (and that is being generous). If you go on TripAdvisor, which I always do when trying to choose a hotel, you will notice that Santa’s lodge comes in at the #1 hotel in Santa Claus. That is because it is the only hotel in Santa Claus! I will say this about the Santa’s Lodge; it may be dated in a 1980’s style but it was clean and close to the park which was acceptable in my book.

We all love Holiday World

Ashley has a Christmas tree growing out of her head

We bought our tickets for the event online which allowed us to enter Holiday World on Friday at 4:30pm. When we arrived at the park I wasn’t surprised to see a long line of enthusiasts waiting to get into the park. I was however surprised to see how long it took for us to get into the park. We waited well over 30 minutes before we entered the nicely decorated Christmas entrance plaza area of the park. I try not to be negative (especially when it comes to Holiday World) but they were off their game initially during the sign in process. The good news is that this would be the only time I could criticize Holiday World for the rest of the event.

Welcome to the front of the park

Love the FREE soft drinks!

We now had about an hour before the scheduled ERT session in the waterpark so we made our way down to the waterpark area. Bri enjoyed stopping by all of the decorated wooden cutouts and putting her face through them. We made it to the waterpark, changed, and waited for the start of ERT which could be on the park’s two incredible water coasters: Wildebeest and Mammoth. I am sure I have said this once before but let me say it again with emphasis; WILDEBEEST AND MAMMOTH ARE THE BEST TWO WATER RIDES THAT I HAVE EVER RIDDEN. Like seriously, ever, and it is not even close. If you are able to get to Holiday World simply to ride these two rides then you have gotten your admissions worth.

Bri is a ghost

Bri is a pilgrim

Wildebeest has more airtime than most roller coasters and I am not even kidding. You also get totally soaked when you ride. There are misters in the tunnels and water elements everywhere. Mammoth inexplicably has the coldest water of any water ride out there. I have no idea how Holiday World does it but they must use some sort of magic water to keep it that cold. You can ride Wildebeest and the water is just right, yet once you ride Mammoth you are sent an artic chill that is most appreciated on the warmest of days. Oh, and did I mention that Mammoth has airtime too? Yup, it does and it is a fabulous ride just like Wildebeest.

Best two water rides in the world

Awwwwww

We were each able to get about two rides in on both Wildebeest and Mammoth in the two hours they were open for ERT. In between the ERT sessions Holiday World rolled out the red carpet for everyone, as they always do, by feeding us some tasty finger foods like chicken bites, cheeses, and cookies. The Bahari Wave pool was open during this time too so we took advantage of that. It was amusing to watch Landyn try and think she could swim by running wildly into the waves. I was there to save her from drowning of course!

Bri loves the carousel...

...and Howler

We left the waterpark area and made our way over to the Thanksgiving area of the park. Keep in mind that the park was now closed to the general public. Holiday World graciously had all of the roller coasters open as well as Turkey Whirl, Mayflower, and Gobbler Getaway from 7:30pm until 11pm. Bri wanted to ride some rides so I rode Turkey Whirl (tilt-a-whirl ride) with her. She loves that ride. It is funny to watch her facial expression when the turkey car starts spinning really fast. She has that, “why am I riding this, please stop the spinning” look, but she keeps riding so that is good.

Get ready to whirl

Landyn is looking to ride something

After Turkey Whirl Ashley took Bri to ride Mayflower the parks swinging ship ride. It was a tad too intense for Bri but she said, reluctantly, that she enjoyed it. We all then walked what felt like a mile to get to the parks newest attraction: Thunderbird. Ashley rode first while I watched the kids. When she got back she said it was a fun ride and that she had enjoyed it. I was able to get back to back rides on Thunderbird since there was no line. I am not going to go into much detail about the ride here but I may write about it in a future blog post so be on the lookout! I will say that I think Thunderbird is a perfect roller coaster addition to Holiday World and is in my opinion the best of the wing style roller coasters out there (I have personally ridden three of them).
Excited to ride Mayflower

Ashley rode a few more of the open rides (turkey whirl, mayflower, and gobbler getaway) with Bri and I rode Voyage back to back after that. I will say that Voyage is a very intense wooden coaster but really is quite shaky/rough now, mostly on the last half of the ride. I still enjoy it though and keep going back for the intense ride it offers. I am no wuss when it comes to rougher wooden coasters, so I will keep riding. I am sure Holiday World will continue to re-track the ride to make it better. I am not saying that I didn’t like Voyage but it has gotten a lot harder to re-ride as much as I used to.
Now your time to sail away, your Voyage begins without delay

We were getting hungry since it was probably well after 9:00pm at this point. The snacks had long last left us. Ashley was gracious enough to go towards the front of the park and grab our dinner (pizza, chips, veggies, and fudge) that Holiday World provided for everyone. I went back up the hill to Thunderbird and I got in four more rides before we all called it a night. We also enjoyed our food at this time and it was very good. I was a little surprised we all left the park together, shortly before 11:00 pm. I had initially planned to walk, alone, back to the hotel but we all made it to the late hour. The kids did fantastic so Ashley decided to stick around until the end. Day one of Holiwood Nights was now complete.

Look! A bird is coming out of the barn!

Thunderbird theming

Day two of the event was now upon us. We made it over to Holiday World around 10:00am when the park opened. Bri wanted to ride some rides so we went into the kiddie area located directly off to the left of the entrance plaza. It is a nice area with a carousel, plane ride, fish ride, Santa ride, and drop tower. Landyn even got to ride the carousel ride which was cute.

Nice kids area

Bri's neck magically gets longer when she rides the fish ride

Awwwwww

We slowly started making our way to the waterpark. Bri and I rode the Scarecrow Scrambler which was fun. Then we made our way down into the waterpark. Once the waterpark was open we played in the Monsoon Lagoon water treehouse structure that Bri loves. She had a blast climbing up the tower and then going down the water slides. It is a great ride for kids and adults to enjoy. After spending a good amount of time there we made our way over to another one of Bri’s favorite rides the Jungle Racers. This is a ten lane across mat racer waterslide with three big drops. It is a really fun ride that both Ashley and I took turns riding with Bri.

Not Monsoon Lagoon but a ride similar

Racing on the Jungle Slides

We took Landyn over to the Safari Sam’s water playground area. They have water jets, a small pool, and a bunch of really great waterslides for young kids. As a parent you can even slide down some of the waterslides with your small child. This was great for us and Landyn. She seemed to have a good time and so did Bri. Bri went down most of the slides on her own. Seriously, more parks need to build this type of thing since it is ideal for families with small children.
Awesome kids water slide area

After we were done with the waterpark, which was insanely crowded, we made our way over to where Thunderbird is located. Ashley and I took turns riding the 60 foot swing ride called Crow’s Nest with Bri. Bri got to ride most things twice because she would usually ride once with me and once with Ashley. Lucky her. After that I waited in a 10-15 minute line for Thunderbird which I thought was pretty good considering it was a Saturday afternoon. Then we made our way down the hill and took a ride on Mayflower followed by Gobbler Getaway.
We love Holiday World!

It was at this point we were getting hungry so we decided to grab some food from Plymouth Rock Café. This is, in my opinion, the best place to eat food inside Holiday World. Where else can you get a full out Thanksgiving feast inside a theme park? All of us shared a huge adult meal portion of food including BBQ pork, mac n cheese, green beans, and sweet potatoes. It was absolutely delicious! They also have many other options for food inside this nicely decorated sit down restaurant.
Incredible food...

...see!

At this point it was late afternoon and Bri really wanted a funnel cake so we went and picked one up. I guess the monster meal we just ate wasn’t good enough when you have smells of funnel cake wafting through the air. We made our way back to Holidogs Funtown kiddie area in the park. They have a small roller coaster called Howler in this section. I rode it twice with Bri but she wanted to ride it more and that is what she did. In fact she probably spent over 30 minutes riding it. No telling how may rides she got in on it but she was loving it. It made me proud to see her marathon a coaster like that. Hopefully someday she will want to do that with me on the bigger coasters out there.

Even the adults love this ride

Bri loves it more

Landyn loves doing Landyn things

Landyn is happy

It was now just after 7:00pm and Holiday World was closed. Ashley and the kids decided to go back to the hotel and get ready for bed. I on the other hand was going to enjoy the three and a half hours of ERT on Raven, Legend, Voyage, and Thunderbird! I started with Raven, riding it four times. Then I made my way over to Legend and also rode it four times. I was going to ride Voyage next but it was down so I headed to Thunderbird and got in ten straight rides. Yes I know, I couldn’t handle myself. It is such an awesome ride! I rode Legend two more times and then rode Voyage four times. I finished the night with ten more rides on Thunderbird. I like to ride great coasters a lot in case you didn’t already know this.

Darkness there and nothing more

Nevermore, Nevermore, Nevermore

What a great way to close out the event! Out of all the coaster enthusiasts events I have attended there is no better ERT event than Holiwood Nights. If you love riding roller coasters then you get over seven hours of ERT on all four of Holiday World’s coasters in two days. You also get a few hours of ERT in the waterpark, which is only icing on the cake. Then add to the fact you are at a great family friendly park and you have an all-around winning situation. The kids did great and we all had a blast. I know I have blogged about Holiday World before and I will keep blogging about them and encouraging families/anyone to go to Holiday World. It is such an amazing park and well worth a visit.

We were all worn out

We love riding the carousel

Coasterstock Day Two

Wow, it has been over four months since I last wrote in this blog. I am not happy about that as I enjoy sharing with you my amusement park experiences. This post has actually been written for a while now I just haven't had the time to finalize the post. Please keep reading as I plan to post more topics to this blog in the future.
Coasters in Paris, err I mean Kings Island

It is now time to blog about my second day at the Kings Island Coasterstock event. The second day of the event offered an hour of ERT in the morning on Flight of Fear, Firehawk, and Racer
starting at 9:00 am. I made the trip to the park solo since Ashley wanted to sleep in. I can’t say that I blame her
although, for me, nothing wakes me up better than riding
coasters early in the morning. I arrived a little before 9:00
am.

I met up with Derk inside the park and we rode Flight of Fear
twice. This ride always seems to have a long line due to its low
capacity but it really is a fun coaster. It has a forceful
launch into darkness as it sends you through three inversions
and many twists and turns. We then rode Firehawk a flying
coaster that is very intense. The coolest element on the ride
for me is going up the lift hill on your back and then being
flipped into a flying motion 100 feet off the ground. This is
quite the thrill. I gotta say I am normally not afraid of any coaster but Firehawk is downright extreme and puts a little lump in my throat every time I ride it. I will go as far and say it is probably the most intense coaster I have ever ridden.

Then we decided to take a ride on the legendary Racer roller
coaster. They stopped us on the lift hill for what seemed like
forever. I am still not sure what happened. Racer really is a
great wooden coaster with nice pops of airtime and minimal
roughness. I hope they keep this coaster for many years to come.
I am pretty confident they will since it has been a staple in
the park for so long. Fun fact: The Racer roller coaster was showcased on The Brady Bunch Show in 1973.

It was now right at 10:00 am so the park was officially open. We
made our way over to Vortex and grabbed the first ride of the
day. In fact, we rode in the front and were the only people on the entire train. Sadly being the only ones on the ride was the most exciting part of the ride. While Vortex may look like a great roller coaster it really is not, unfortunately. It is very rickety and rough and is only good enough to ride once. It was once the only coaster in the world with six inversions.
Cool looking entrance

Looks are deceiving on this one

We decided to walk over and ride the Beast a few times. This
ride is such a classic even in the daylight. We then made our
way over to Diamondback and there was basically no line. It was
at this point I knew that the park wasn’t going to be busy
today. We rode Diamondback 5 times within the hour. It really
amazed me how the park went from INSANELY busy the previous day
(Saturday) to extremely low crowds on Sunday. This put a smile
on my face however, knowing that I would get a lot of rides in
today.
My face when there are no lines

Diamondback in all its glory

Now this is what I am talking about!

I went to pick up Ashley shortly after 11:00 am from the hotel.
We went back to the park to have lunch which was provided by
Kings Island for the event. Lunch included hot dogs and
hamburgers as well as blue ice cream for dessert! I was so
excited that I ate two of them. Blue Ice Cream is a phenomenon
that must be experienced sometime in your life. It is delicious.
We love Kings Island

I am happy

It was now time to get to riding again so we started off with
Surf Dog a fun ride that goes back and forth while spinning
slightly over a small hill in the middle. Diamondback was up
next with a wait of 10-15 minutes! It sure beats the hour plus
lines it was yesterday. We then rode Beast, Stunt Track, Racer,
Adventure Express, Viking Fury, and Banshee. That was 8 rides in
a period of a few hours.
This is not a dog nor does it surf

Skloooooosh!

It was at this point Ashley was getting tired and decided to go
back to the hotel. I was all jacked up on Mountain Dew (not
really) so I went and rode more rides. I mean I had to take full advantage of minimal lines! I got back to back rides in on the Bat mostly because it takes what feels like an hour to walk back to. This is a fun coaster with nice speed. I just wish it were longer.
To the batmobile, err coaster bat car

I met back up with Derk again and we went and rode Invertigo an
inverted coaster that goes forwards and backwards through a
series of three loops forwards and three backwards. It is quite
an intense ride. The seats also face each other so you get to
see the people’s reactions in front of you as you ride. We
managed to sit in front of this older guy and his facial
expressions during the ride were quite amusing. It looked like
he was about to hurl with his eyes closed the entire time. Thank-you older guy for not puking on Derk and me.

Next up we got in back to back rides on Banshee. Again, the
lines were minimal so we took full advantage. We then made our
way down the Coney Island Mall area of the park and rode some
rides I had never ridden at the park before. We rode the
Scrambler and Shake Rattle and Roll both of which are fun flat
rides. We took another ride on Stunt Track followed by
Windseeker. Windseeker may not be very fast and thrilling but if
you are scared of heights this ride is not for you. I am semi-
scared of heights and I still ride it though. It is nice being
300 feet in the area soaring above the park.
A little Shake, a little Rattle, a little Roll

It was now after 7:00 pm and I was getting hungry. I didn’t
really want to grab a full dinner so I settled for my park
staple when I need food: the Pretzel. For the price (around $5)
this is a good item to eat. I also paid $4 for a 32oz drink
because I was thirsty and I wanted a soda. The sad thing is, is
that I actually had a $.99 refill mug but who wants to carry the
thing around all day? I know I don’t. I would rather just have a
bracelet or something but for some reason parks have not latched onto this idea. This may actually be grounds for a future blog post so be on the lookout.
Loop de Loop

Awesome first Drop

It was almost time for the park to close so I decided what
better way to end the day then a ride on the Beast. It was now
after 8:00 pm and the park was officially closed but not for us!
ERT was going to start at 8:30 pm. Derk and I decided to ride
Diamondback first. We got in 4 straight rides with one being in
the front row. We would have gotten more rides in if it weren’t
for Kings Island’s policy of no re-rides. They make you exit the
ride and walk all the way back around. I won’t complain though
because, well, we still got a ton of rides in. I will say this;
my opinion of Diamondback actually got better with this visit. I
had some of the best rides I have ever gotten on it. The floaty
(I know not a word) airtime on the hills is quite fun and makes
this ride a top tier coaster in my opinion.
Over the building and thru the trees...

...to floaty airtime we go.
Since we knew we needed to get some night rides in on Beast we headed over there for 4 straight rides. As always the Beast did not disappoint at night. It threw us around in the woods like it was designed to do. I love the screeching noises the train makes as it blasts through the tunnels and massive helix. The Beast still reigns supreme as probably the best night ride on a coaster that I have ever ridden.

At this point it was about 9:45 pm fifteen minutes away from the
end of ERT. We decided to head all the way across the park for
one last ride on Banshee. We also needed to use our free on-ride
photo coupons as well. We made it with a few minutes to spare
and scored a great night ride. Banshee is a great ride at night
and great ride overall. It was an awesome way to cap off the
Coasterstock event. I was officially worn out.
Banshee is Scary

Me and my hair are done.

What more can I say? Kings Island has come a long way since my
first visit back in the early 90’s and even after adding
Diamondback in 2009 and Banshee in 2014. They have really
improved in many areas and I rank this park really high on my
list of amusement parks. Coasterstock was awesome. It cost me
only $25 (with season pass) and $62 for Ashley for this: Two-day
admission, tons of ERT, dinner Saturday, lunch Sunday, free
souvenir refill cups, free t-shirts, two free on-ride photos per
person, Coasterstock pin, and event lanyard. Kings Island went
above and beyond and they deserve a lot of thanks. Next to
Holiwood Nights this was one of the best coaster enthusiast
events I have ever attended.
